Norse Face
I've always loved the old carvings and sculptures of the "Green Men", or old forest gods that adorn many places in Europe.
Silvanus
was my first attempt at one such work and having finally got the time
and the nerve to attempt a similar piece, I'm attacking a large chunk
of forest redgum which I sliced out of a stump nearly two years ago.
As
it turns out, the finished product is more Greek in appearance than
Norse. But for the beard ring he wouldn't look out of place in a line
up between Homer and Herodotus. I was determined to do this one in a
tool finish; partly as
an exercise in better chisel management, but mainly due to my
monumental hatred of sanding. I blame "Patience" for this.
